Why No Anime Games on Xbox? An Executive Blocked Them Out of Hate
Jez Corden reveals that one person at Xbox halted these titles for years.
For many years, the community enjoying anime-style video games, visual novels, and dating simulators noticed a suspicious pattern with Microsoft’s console. While these titles arrived in abundance on PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and PC, Xbox’s catalog lacked them. Many assumed it was a corporate stance to avoid the Western market, but the truth behind this void could be more ridiculous and personal than imagined.

Journalist and insider Jez Corden recently shared an industry rumor. According to sources he spoke with, the absence of these titles on Xbox wasn’t due to market studies or sales strategies, but to one person’s personal tastes with enough power to decide what got approved.
Apparently, this executive harbored a strong aversion to Japanese and anime-style games, using his position to systematically reject any proposal. This led to the theory that the company deliberately censored or blocked otaku content. Corden clarified this should be taken cautiously as a rumor, but it aligns with the platform’s historic lack of such games.

Luckily, things changed drastically with restructuring and leadership changes in the division. Titles previously outright rejected began getting the green light, explaining the recent surge of Eastern games and anime-style RPGs on Xbox.
About Xbox
Xbox is Microsoft’s gaming brand, launched in 2001 with its first console. Historically focused on Western markets and genres like first-person shooters and driving games, Xbox has sought to expand in Asia across generations, including Xbox 360, Xbox One, and recent Series X and Series S. In recent years, Microsoft has doubled efforts to attract Japanese audiences and fans of Eastern pop culture through strategic partnerships and subscription services, moving away from ignoring these genres.
