“What do I do with this?”: Japanese VTuber discovers 98% of her viewers are men

A curious moment where the independent creator faced her chat’s real numbers.

Sometimes reality hits you when you open the control panel during a live stream. That’s what happened to illustrator and independent VTuber Yunmi, who during one of her recent streams decided to check her channel’s internal metrics, unaware of the revelation about to appear on screen.

While sharing her screen with viewers, the creator opened the channel analytics to see who was watching her live streams. To no one’s surprise in the community, but causing an unforgettable reaction from the streamer herself, the gender breakdown showed a staggering 98% male audience, leaving female viewers at a nearly nonexistent 1.6%. The data also revealed that most of her followers are between 25 and 44 years old.

Seeing the numbers on the panel, Yunmi fell silent for several seconds before letting out a comment full of confusion mixed with laughter, wondering aloud what she was supposed to do with such an overwhelming male majority in her chat. The moment instantly became one of the most discussed among her followers, as it’s rare for an independent talent to openly show the real demographics consuming their content.

This marked difference aligns perfectly with market studies published by the Yano Research Institute between 2023 and 2026, confirming that the main audience for virtual creators in Japan is predominantly men in their twenties and thirties. The phenomenon is even more evident with independent female talents or those under agencies, whose designs and themes massively attract male audiences.

Yunmi is a well-known Japanese illustrator active since at least 2014, famous on social media for her detailed work focused on female school-style characters with uniforms, backpacks, and swimsuits. On September 28, 2025, she entered content creation by debuting as an independent VTuber, using an avatar of a short girl with black hair and blue eyes. Her streams often combine casual talks with digital drawing and simple gaming sessions.

What do you think of Yunmi’s amusing reaction to discovering her channel’s demographics?
