Japan in crisis: Over a third of men in their 20s are virgins

A Sagami Rubber study revealed that the lack of intimacy in Japan continues to plummet.

Japan’s demographic crisis and lack of interest in romantic relationships have become a harsh statistical reality. Sagami Rubber, a major condom and adult product manufacturer, has published its “Sex in Japan 2026 Edition” survey, revealing grim numbers about the country’s youth’s love lives.

Virginity in 20s is now normal for many

The study, which collected data from over 14,300 people aged 20–60 nationwide, showed that 35.5% of Japanese men in their 20s have never had sexual experience. That means more than one in three young men remain virgins. For women in the same age group, the figure is slightly lower at 31.9%.

The trend isn’t limited to the youngest; men exceed women in “zero experience” statistics across all age groups from 20 to 50. The dating market is nearly frozen: 51% of singles in their 20s admitted not having a partner. Only 28.5% of single men reported being in a relationship, compared to 37.9% of women.

Frequency, satisfaction, and mismatched numbers

For those who do have intimacy, the national average is just 1.95 times per month. Young people in their 20s have more, averaging 4.31 times monthly, but the number drops sharply with age. The average “debut” age nationwide is 22.02 years (men start at 23.01, women at 21.07).

Curiously, when asked about lifetime partners, the numbers showed a classic discrepancy: men claimed an average of 13.31 partners, while women reported only 6.38.

Despite this landscape of abstinence and solitude, people seem to have adapted. 67.5% of respondents said they were happy with their intimate lives, with 20-somethings being the most satisfied (nearly 80% felt content with their current situation).

With these numbers, do you think modern lifestyles, overwork, and digital entertainment are killing interest in real relationships in Japan?
