A television anime adaptation of the adult doujinshi (self-published comic) The Lonely Snow Widow and the Cursed Ring was revealed on May 29. According to the creators, this seems to be the first case of an R-rated doujinshi being directly turned into a TV anime, without any prior publishing by a commercial company.

The Lonely Snow Widow and the Cursed Ring is an original doujinshi series created by Puuna Puuzaki, first launched in 2021. The narrative is a somewhat awkward romantic comedy that follows Takahashi, a man who unexpectedly inherits a residential building occupied solely by yokai (supernatural creatures) from his father. One day, the main character meets Yukino, who is a type of yokai known as a Snow Woman (JP: yuki onna), and the pair are instantly attracted to each other. However, they find themselves in a minor dispute, causing them to grow distant.

Determined to fix their bond, the protagonist discovers a ring that gives him the power to manipulate the minds of yokai. Now holding tremendous power, he faces the moral question of whether to use the ring to heal his relationship with Yukino or to indulge his own wants.

After the announcement of the Snow Widow’s anime version, author Puuzaki remarked, “I’m sure many of you are looking at this and going ‘Wait, a TV anime? Not an OVA??’ but I’m the one who’s most surprised here. I think the fact that this title has come this far is all thanks to your support.”

Although the anime will feature some changes compared to the original story, Puuzaki states they were involved in overseeing the adaptation down to the smallest elements, and are very pleased with how the production is progressing. The broadcast date is still pending, with additional details expected to be shared through the title’s official X account
