Evil Stepmothers? My Stepmother and Stepsisters Aren’t Wicked anime debunks the myth

Keisuke Inoue delivers an emotional story where kindness transforms a broken family.

Fairy tales taught us that stepmothers and stepsisters mean cruelty, domestic exploitation, and poisoned apples. This old narrative is about to get a complete twist because not all blended families want to make your life miserable. The animated adaptation of My Stepmother and Stepsisters Aren’t Wicked (Gibo to Gishi ga Warui Wake ga Nai) has confirmed this shift with a new promotional video, revealing that its release date is set for July 8th. This preview offers a glimpse into the warm, emotional tone of the series, showcasing key moments of daily coexistence and highlighting the contrast between the protagonist’s fears and the kind reality she faces.

About My Stepmother and Stepsisters Aren’t Wicked

For those who love judging a book by its cover only to be surprised, the source material is a manga by Otsuji, originally published on Ichijinsha’s Comic Pool digital platform. The work has won readers’ appreciation by subverting traditional family drama clichΓ©s, focusing on empathy and sweetness rather than forced conflict.

The story follows Miya, the illegitimate daughter of a high-status family. After losing her mother, Miya moves to her biological father’s large estate, expecting a living hell under her new stepmother and stepsisters. However, her fears instantly dissolve upon arrival: the women she feared are genuinely kind, ready to offer her a real home. What seemed like a tragic story of school and domestic misery quickly transforms into one about healing, acceptance, and the true bonds of a found family.

Sometimes a calm, positive anime is just what’s needed between intense action series. Do you prefer these comforting stories where conflicts are resolved with empathy, or do you feel a family plot needs extra drama and rivalry to stay engaging?
