South Korean indie development team KiwiSaurus is currently crafting Doomed Otaku, a humorous thriller-themed visual novel that incorporates adventure gameplay, set to debut on PC via Steam and Itch.io. The project has recently rolled out demos for both platforms.

Doomed Otaku centers on Da-Yeon Jin, a devoted otaku recluse who’s obsessed with the Japanese idol game Idol☆Star. Upon learning about a limited-edition Idol☆Star perfume launch in Japan, Da-Yeon and a crew of fellow anime enthusiasts pool their funds to import it, with the protagonist tasked with managing the collective money. However, her poor financial habits lead her to recklessly spend every cent, forcing her to come up with $5.000 in just 14 days to secure the perfume order.

As you guide Da-Yeon through her predicament, you’ll shift between the stark black and white “real world” and the colorful digital realm of the Internet. In reality, Da-Yeon can engage in everyday tasks like assisting her landlord with apartment management and bonding with neighbors for potential support, along with taking on a part-time delivery gig and scavenging the town for valuables. Given her reclusive nature, Da-Yeon must accumulate SP (Social Points) to venture outdoors.

In the online dimension, the protagonist spends time with her cherished idols Ikeman, Neketsu and Shotaro, engaging in otaku debates and fandom disputes (where Da-Yeon, revered as an online influencer, sarcastically serves as a judge), and earning Idol☆Star virtual currency to exchange for real money.

Notably, Doomed Otaku features an affinity system. Players can forge bonds with NPCs from both the physical world and the web, with possible relationships spanning romance, business collaborations, and toxic rivalries. The game’s narrative branches into 20 distinct endings based on player decisions.

Doomed Otaku is an indie creation that twists Korean otaku culture into a dark comedy. Its visual style takes cues from Omori and Needy Streamer Overload, while its writing echoes the tone of Buried Stars, The Black Room, and Dark Moon: The Grey City.

Doomed Otaku is slated for release on October 16, 2026 on PC through Steam and Itch.io. Demos are available now for both services.
