Game publisher Waku Waku Games has launched Drowning Song of the Stagnant Sea, a fresh visual novel created by indie developer Kūsō no Kōbō for PC (Steam). This game presents a dark fairytale-like story focusing on the relationship between a human woman and a female sea creature.

Marketed as a “platonic yuri romance novel,” Drowning Song of the Stagnant Sea revolves around the meeting between Aisha, a stunning human, and Gisela, who belongs to a persecuted species of man-eating monsters known as scyllas. Based on player decisions, their connection can evolve into either a tale of affection or death, as Gisela battles her impulse to kill and consume Aisha, whose beauty fills her with consuming envy.

Gameplay in Song of the Drowning Sea adheres to the classic visual novel structure. Players move the story forward by clicking through text and artwork, while periodically making selections that shape the plot. The creators have indicated that these choices can result in four distinct conclusions. Completing the game requires approximately three to five hours of playtime.

Aesthetically, the game embraces storybook-inspired artwork, yet its storyline explores mature content such as suicide, sexual assault, human trafficking, and substance abuse, as noted on the Steam store page.

Extra functionalities encompass scene selection, a glossary section, and a gallery mode, plus an additional side story that becomes accessible once players finish the main storyline.

Drowning Song of the Stagnant Sea represents developer KÅ«sō no Kōbō’s second commercial release after It Seems the Slime Girl Seems to Wants to Be Friends with Humans+, a charming and brief visual novel that earned a “Very Positive” rating on Steam. In contrast, this new title demonstrates greater ambition in scope, showcasing the creator’s most extensive scenario to date.

Drowning Song of the Stagnant Sea can be purchased now for PC (Steam). The title is being offered at a 10% discount until May 1.
