Japanese entertainment conglomerate Toei has unveiled the creation of its dedicated gaming division Toei Games. This debut announcement showcased the brand’s fresh logo alongside a pixel art rendition of Toei’s iconic cinematic opening sequence featuring waves striking against rocky shores, specially created by game developer Kairosoft.
Globally recognized for its anime division Toei Animation (responsible for One Piece, Dragon Ball), Toei is now diversifying its portfolio beyond television, cinema and animation to enter the interactive gaming industry. The newly formed gaming label will first focus on PC platforms (particularly Steam), with intentions to later extend its reach to PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and Xbox consoles.
In an unexpected move, Toei Games’s initial catalog won’t feature titles based on established franchises. Instead, the company aims to nurture entirely original gaming intellectual properties developed from the ground up by creators from both Japan and abroad. These ventures will also capitalize on Toei’s technical expertise and industry knowledge accumulated through decades of film production.
Detailed information regarding forthcoming game releases will be revealed on April 24. Fans and interested parties can access the official website here.
Notably, Toho, another prominent force in Japan’s entertainment sector, has recently revealed plans to bolster its gaming division, with developments underway for both console and mobile titles. Unlike Toei’s approach, Toho intends to capitalize on its renowned Godzilla franchise. Nevertheless, both entertainment giants appear determined to establish a significant presence in the worldwide gaming market.
