Losing talents that have accompanied us for decades on screen always leaves a huge void in the audience community. For loyal fans of Detective Conan, today brings heartbreaking news. The agency representing legendary actress Wakana Yamazaki, globally recognized for voicing resilient Ran Mouri throughout the franchise, confirmed her tragic death at 61 due to severe health complications.

A pause foreshadowing the worst
Alarms about her health began in mid-February, when her representatives issued an official statement announcing that the actress would temporarily suspend all work activities due to strict medical orders. During this prolonged absence, the enormous responsibility of keeping her iconic character alive fell to colleague Akemi Okamura, who took on the role as a substitute. Unfortunately, treatments did not yield the expected results. According to the report published on May 15, Yamazaki passed away on April 18, 2026, bidding farewell in a private ceremony that, respecting her familyβs wishes, was attended only by her closest loved ones.

The soul of a historic character
Although native to Kanagawa Prefecture, she lent her undeniable talent to various projects throughout her career, excelling in classic series and voicing video games of the era, her name and legacy will always be tied to the history of the young detective. Giving Ran Mouri such a warm, energetic, and deeply protective personality for so many years demanded absolute commitment, and Yamazaki succeeded in making the character the true emotional heart of the entire series. For now, the production committee has chosen to remain silent on future plans for the character, focusing entirely on honoring the artistβs memory.
Knowing that future episodes of the series will no longer feature that same distinctive essence in dialogue is a heavy blow for those who grew up with the animated investigations. Reflecting on all the time she invested in delivering memorable performances behind the microphone, what do you consider to be the most emotional moment or the most impactful action scene from her portrayal throughout Detective Conanβs history?
