Failing at magic for a whole life and dying without achieving it is a bad ending for any story. But Ephtal was lucky that wasn’t the end. The main trailer of From Overshadowed to Overpowered confirmed its premiere on June 25, 2026 and revealed that the opening is by FLOW, the band behind “GO!!!” from Naruto and “Colors” from Code Geass. The fit is almost too obvious to be coincidence.

The trailer shows the series’ tone for the first time: Ephtal’s reincarnation story, his magical battles, and the contrast between his previous life as an untalented mage and his second chance filled with power and accumulated knowledge. The opening “+Encount” by FLOW accompanies the scenes. The ending “Dokei” is performed by TrySail.

One of the most curious casting details is that the protagonist Ephtal is voiced by three different seiyuus depending on his life stage: Shuichiro Umeda voices the current Ephtal, while Hiroki Tochi and Ayaka Fukuhara portray the wise elder and young Ephtal from his previous life respectively. This casting choice directly reflects the narrative structure of a story where the protagonist is literally not the same person.

From Overshadowed to Overpowered (Rakudai Kenja no Gakuin Muso: Nidome no Tensei, S-Rank Cheat Majutsushi Bokenroku) is based on a light novel by Arata Shiraishi with illustrations by Uodenim, published by Kadokawa from October 2019 to its eighth volume in March 2022. The manga adaptation, drawn by Kentaro, runs in Manga UP! by Square Enix since September 2019 and has nine compiled volumes. The story follows Ephtal, a man reincarnated from modern Earth into a magic world who dedicates his life to mastering magic, only to discover he has no talent for it and dies in despair. Four hundred years later, he reincarnates again with the same name, retaining all the knowledge and power accumulated from his previous existence. With this advantage, he begins a second life aimed at reaching the pinnacle of magic.
