Japanese content creator platform Fantia, managed by comic publisher Toranoana, has announced it will temporarily revert its newly implemented censorship rules for 2D (non-live action) adult content. This move comes after significant backlash from the community, particularly creators who faced the arduous task of updating mosaic censorship on dozens or even hundreds of their past works.

As Fantia detailed in its latest X post, the platform is now in talks with relevant authorities about future policies and publishing standards for 2D content. This means the “tougher” guidelines introduced on May 25 have been rolled back, while the previous rules are reinstated until the platform administrators finalize new mosaic and censorship regulations. According to the post, the updated standards and their implementation date will be disclosed soon.

For background, the May 25 guidelines caused issues because they were applied retroactively, affecting not just new uploads but also content published before the policy took effect. This meant creators on Fantia had to manually edit or remove all their older posts that violated the new rules. Those who didn’t comply risked account suspensions or deletions, and in severe cases, the platform warned it might report offenders to law enforcement or other authorities.

Given that some creators had years of content requiring manual review and possible revisions to meet the new rules (Fantia has been active for over a decade as of this writing), it’s no surprise that users reacted negatively to the policy shift.

The platform cited “extremely stringent feedback from various relevant organizations” as the reason for the initial guideline changes, pointing to multiple crackdowns and convictions tied to insufficient mosaic censorship. The revised rules demanded that all artists and creators use “stricter” censorship on their NSFW art—transparent mosaics, light blurring, or any censorship failing to fully obscure sensitive parts would be considered inadequate.

While the specifics of the “new guidelines” remain unclear, it appears the pressure from users and creators was enough to convince Fantia to revert to its original rules for now.

However, many creators who had already invested time revising their works to comply with the stricter rules, only to see them revert, have voiced disappointment and frustration over the platform’s “reckless” handling of the situation.
