The new Madoka Magica movie reveals its full trailer, theme song, and release date
Yuki Kajiura returns with FictionJunction for the most anticipated sequel to the anime.
More than a decade after Rebellion, Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Walpurgisnacht Rising has a release date, a full trailer, and a theme song. The official sequel to the 2013 film released its main trailer revealing that FictionJunction, the solo project of composer Yuki Kajiura, performs the theme “Kanata”. The cinema release is confirmed for August 28, 2026.
The full trailer features new footage from the movie alongside the first listen of “Kanata,” completing the musical landscape of a project that since 2011 has built part of its identity on Kajiura’s music. The film closes a cycle that began when SHAFT hinted at a new project in the franchise through a cinematic concept in 2015. The official announcement came in April 2021, and since then the film faced multiple delays: from winter 2024 to winter 2025, then to February 2026, and finally to August 28, 2026 after an additional delay in January due to production circumstances.
Director Yukihiro Miyamoto leads the project, with most of the original team returning, including chief director Akiyuki Shinbo, screenwriter Gen Urobuchi of Nitroplus, and studio SHAFT. The original creators Magica Quartet, original character designer Ume Aoki, animation character designer Junichiro Taniguchi, and the alternative space design group Gekidan Inu Curry also return.

About Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Puella Magi Madoka Magica is a twelve-episode original anime series produced by SHAFT under the direction of Akiyuki Shinbo that aired in 2011. The story follows Madoka Kaname and her friends as they uncover the truth behind the contract that turns them into magical girls. The series redefined the magical girl genre and became one of the most influential works in anime in the last decade. The first cinematic continuation arrived in 2013 with Rebellion, which in turn closed with a twist that left the door open for exactly what, more than a decade later, is about to arrive in cinemas.
Is the “Kanata” theme by FictionJunction already getting you ready to see Walpurgisnacht Rising on August 28, or does the wait of over a decade make anything that comes feel deserved?
The Stardust Telepath manga will conclude in its seventh volume
