Acacia, the Japanese indie studio known for the widely acclaimed Magical Girl Witch Trials, has recently unveiled the Steam store page for its upcoming horror visual novel, Magical Girl Taboo Village. Although the new title shares some connections with its predecessor—including the confirmed appearance of Hiro Nikaido, one of the 13 prisoners from Acacia’s earlier work—it introduces a fresh protagonist and draws inspiration from Japanese folk-horror traditions. The game is slated for release later this year.

Magical Girl Taboo Village centers on Sakuya Watanuki, a girl with a flower sprouting from her eye, who finds herself in an ancient shrine alongside nine other girls in identical circumstances. Nearby, they discover the lifeless body of a girl whose entire body is covered in blooming flowers. The girls are addressed by Yumemi, a caretaker who informs them that they have been chosen as magical girls for the Flower Offering Ritual—a ceremony requiring one girl to be hanged each night at 8 PM as an offering to the Kamibana.

Determined not to passively await their fate, Sakuya and her companions explore the village they are confined in, seeking to unravel its customs and hidden truths. In their journey, they uncover the origins of the Flower Offering Ritual, the nature of the Kamibana, and the mysteries surrounding each other. The Steam store page for Magical Girl Taboo Village highlights “perspective shifts” that will reveal multiple facets of the game’s intricate narrative.

Despite Magical Girl Witch Trials fans still awaiting an English localization, Acacia plans to offer English support for Magical Girl Taboo Village shortly after its Japanese release, ensuring the narrative’s quality remains intact. Given the overwhelmingly positive reception of Witch Trials on Steam, expectations for this new title are running high.

Magical Girl Taboo Village is scheduled to launch in 2026 for PC (Steam).
